Keeping a Porta Potty Working Through a Kentucky Winter

Frankfort's January nights average about 25°F, cold enough to freeze an untreated porta potty tank. From November through March, we add non-toxic antifreeze at every service. A few placement choices on your end keep the unit usable on the coldest mornings.

What freezes first in a porta potty?

The hand sanitizer and any fresh-water parts freeze first, followed by the top of the waste tank. Flushing units and hand washing stations freeze faster than standard units because their water lines are thin. A standard unit with antifreeze in the tank stays usable into the low teens.

Where should a winter unit be placed?

A winter unit should sit on the south or east side of a building, out of the northwest wind, on ground that drains. Keep it close to the work so the door stays shut between uses. Avoid low spots where melt water refreezes into ice at the door.

  • Clear snow from the door and the truck path before service day.
  • Salt the step area, not inside the unit.
  • Keep the door closed; an open door lets the tank freeze fast.

Should I change units for winter?

Winter job sites do best with standard units plus antifreeze service. Winter events should use a standard unit or a heated restroom trailer, not a flushing unit. Restroom trailers have heat and stay usable when the outlet stays live.

Questions people ask before they book

Does winter service cost extra?

Winter service costs nothing extra, because antifreeze is included from November through March. Each service adds non-toxic antifreeze to the tank. The 28-day price stays the same all year. Extra service visits start at $65 if you need them.

Can service trucks reach my site after snow?

Service trucks reach your site after snow once the roads are passable. On heavy snow days, service may shift by one day. Clear the path to the unit to keep your service day. Salt the step area outside the door, not inside the unit.

Will the unit smell less in winter?

A porta potty smells much less in winter because cold slows odor. Most winter sites stay fresh on weekly service alone. Each visit still adds fresh deodorizer. Keep the door shut between uses to protect the tank from freezing.
