Where to Put a Porta Potty: Delivery Day Checklist
A porta potty should sit on level, firm ground within about 15 feet of a drive the truck can reach. It should stay 10 feet from septic lids and wells, and away from food. This checklist helps homeowners, crews and planners pick the spot before the truck arrives.

What does the porta potty delivery truck need?
The delivery truck needs a firm path about 10 feet wide, overhead clearance of about 14 feet and a spot within 15 feet of where the unit goes. Soft lawns after rain, steep drives and low wires are the usual problems. Tell us about each one on the call.
- Path: 10 ft wide, firm gravel, pavement or dry grass.
- Overhead: about 14 ft clear of wires and branches.
- Gates: at least 48 in for a carried standard unit; ADA units need wider.
- Slope: no steeper than about 1 inch per foot at the spot.
How far from the house, food and septic?
Keep the unit 10 feet from septic lids, wells and property lines where you can, and 25 feet or more downwind of food. Close to the house is fine. At events, place units near but not inside the gathering, with a lit path for evening use.
| Keep away from | Distance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Septic lids and wells | 10 ft+ | Service truck weight and hoses |
| Food tables and grills | 25 ft+, downwind | Odor and hygiene |
| Low ground and creek banks | As high as possible | Flooding and soft soil |
| Doorways and walkways | Out of the path | Traffic and privacy |
Which way should the door face?
The door should face away from the street and seating for privacy, toward the path guests or crews use. On windy hilltops, face the door away from the wind so it does not slam. The driver turns the unit to your choice on placement.
Questions people ask before they book
Can the porta potty go on my lawn?
A porta potty can go on your lawn when the ground is dry and level. After heavy rain, a driveway edge avoids ruts from the truck. Stay 10 feet away from septic lids and wells. Mark the spot with a flag before delivery.
Can I move it after delivery?
A used porta potty should not be moved by you after delivery. The tank can slosh and tip the unit over. Ask for a relocation, and the crew moves it safely. A move is quoted as one trip.
Does it need to be staked?
A porta potty needs to be staked only on exposed, windy ground. Units can be staked or strapped on request. Hilltops and open fields are the usual spots that need it. Face the door away from the wind so it does not slam.
